Pear Applesauce

Hello everyone! Pear Applesauce CV

I hope everyone has had a great start to your week! I sure have between making Christmas gifts, which consists of cooking and canning apples and pears to share with everyone! I am so glad that this year I am experienced enough in canning to be able to give out jars of my amazing jams and jellies this year! I have only been canning for about a year now, so I am quite excited to save money and give such amazing gifts too!

Today’s recipe is one that my mom and I have recently been experimenting with. Earlier in the fall we were given Asian pears in our CSA box along with apples. The apples were good but there wasn’t enough for us to make applesauce with… so we decided to throw the pears in there to see what would happen. Literally Awesome! I don’t think I could have had an applesauce that was any better! I was really surprised because pears are not my favorite fruit. I think it has to do with the texture but I just am not a fan of pears. However, in this beautiful pear applesauce they are masked well with the apples and the spices that I cannot even taste them!

I have always seen apples and pears together in a fruit salad but rarely have I heard of pear sauce! I felt as though I needed to share this glorious sauce with you because well it tastes just down right amazing!

Pear Applesauce
12 medium sized Apples (I used local Fuji apples)
8 Asian Pears (I got them locally too!)
2 cups of water mixed with 2 tsp Lemon Juice
1 cup Coconut Palm Sugar
2 tsp Cinnamon
1/4 tsp Nutmeg
1/4 tsp Cloves
Pinch of Cardamom

Skin, core and cut your apples and pears and as you do that place into the pot along with the lemon juice and water. This will keep your apples from browning (not that it matters too much). Once done place on stove and mix in sugar and spices.

boil and cook your apples on medium heat for about 25 minutes. Take your masher and mash your apples. If you want a smooth applesauce use your immersion blender. Cook the sauce until it reduced to almost half as much as the original amount (or it has hit mid way on the pot). Let it cool for about 5 minutes it will thicken as it cools too! Then spoon into pint jars (5 jars or 10 cups of applesauce) or let cool completely and refrigerate until gone! It will stay good in the fridge for about 2 weeks or good for a year canned. You can also freeze as well!

We love to eat it warm right out of the pot! Applesauce is my favorite thing to make this time of year because it makes a simple snack and just tastes out of this world! While I was taking pictures I had to control myself! I ended up taking a bite or 2 before I got done taking pictures and immediately finished eating the bowl right after! Nothing gets wasted in this household especially if it is this pear applesauce! It also compliments your prescription medicine well in the morning (orpear applesauce 1 at night). My mom showed me this trick for when I was little and hated swallowing pills!

Of course if you do not have any pears just use 8 more apples! It still tastes amazing too!

Mmmm! Sounds delicious! I love the combo of pears and applesauce, adds a different flavor and stretches the apples a bit further. 🙂

It most certainly does Kate! I canned this for Christmas presents but I had to try it afterwards because I know it would be gone if I didn’t! hah

I would love to order a dozen jars for Christmas please! I have never tried Coconut Palm Sugar, so I really look forward to trying this. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Susan! Coconut Palm sugar is an unrefined sugar made from the bark of coconuts. It has a little bit of a molasses-y flavor by itself but cooking with it is just like cooking with regular sugar and it is only about 30 on the glycemic index so it is a very low sugar!

Gabby, this sounds delish. I love both pears and apples, but I like them more cooked than raw. So this is right up my alley. Throw in the cardamom and cloves and you had me at “Hello”!!! I love how you aren’t afraid to try anything and jump right in making adjustments along the way! So awesome!
